First Holy Communion – annually in Cameroon

As every year, good news from Garoua – more children have made their First Holy Communion this year.

First Holy Communion in Africa has great cultural significance, and is often celebrated with great enthusiasm and community involvement. In many African countries, children become part of a group, it gives a sense of a certain belonging, in countries where relationships with children are often not of a similar nature as in Western countries.

In a culture where we treat children as separate individuals who have their own opinions, needs, are included in the family’s decision-making processes, lavished – the strictness of relationships in Africa and pragmatism can sometimes be difficult.

Belonging to groups – including church groups – is sometimes the most valuable thing for children and young people, besides the opportunity to learn.
